Hello, World of Digital Health: Reflections from Our Newest Developers

2 people working

The first few months in a new company can say a lot about the work, the people, and the culture you’re stepping into. That’s why we asked two of our newest team members at Kodality to tell how their journeys have started. Vladimir joined us as a junior developer in January 2025. Anton started an internship in April 2025.

1. Why did you decide to apply for an internship at Kodality?

Vladimir: I have a medical background and Kodality is working on healthcare systems. I knew that I wanted to develop healthcare solutions when I started my technical studies at the university. I live in Tartu, so it is very beneficial that Kodality has an office in my hometown.

Anton: Until I saw the job listing at Futulab, I hadn't heard about Kodality. The first thing I did was researching the company. I looked up Kodality on LinkedIn, and what immediately attracted me was the fact that they work on projects that truly matter. Later, a friend from another major IT company casually mentioned their collaboration with Kodality and praised the professionalism of their programmers. That was the moment I understood that I wanted to become part of this company.

2. What were your expectations before the internship started?

Vladimir: I had the fear of looking stupid, not knowing what to do and being slow in my progression. Fortunately I was reminded by my colleagues that there can be big learning curves at first and it is normal not to know everything at first.

Anton: Before the internship started, I hoped that I would have good and supportive colleagues, the opportunity to work on a real project that would somehow impact the world around me, and gain knowledge of high quality coding practices.

3. What was your first week like?

Vladimir: My first week was pleasant. People were very supportive and patient with me. The first day was mostly onboarding with management and setting up my workstation with my mentor so I could start working. During the first week I was brought up to speed with the business processes and technologies used in my project.

Anton: My first week was pretty intense. I received a lot of new information and tasks, and initially I had no idea how to apply it to the project we were working on. Luckily, I have supportive colleagues and a great mentor who were willing to help me with all the problems I encountered. Because of their support, my first week went as smoothly as possible.

4. How would you describe the team and the culture at Kodality?

Vladimir: Everybody gets along really well and it is a very open community. A lot of team events to bring the community closer to each other.

Anton: The team at Kodality is highly collaborative and supportive. What stands out is the culture of knowledge sharing, where everyone is willing to help each other grow professionally. There's a strong emphasis on quality and innovation, with team members who are not only technically skilled but also passionate about creating solutions that make a real difference. The supportive environment makes the onboarding process easy for newcomers. The culture promotes continuous learning and improvement, which aligns perfectly with my goals as an intern.

5. What has surprised you the most so far?

Vladimir: Some things just take time - every problem can’t be solved in 8h workday or 40h workweek.

Anton: The thing that has surprised me the most so far is how supportive the team is. From day one, everyone has been incredibly welcoming and willing to help, whether it’s answering questions, sharing knowledge, or just checking in to see how things are going. It’s made the learning process much smoother and has created a really positive environment to grow in.

6. What have you learned (or are still learning)?

Vladimir: I have learned how IT projects are handled, CI/CD, what people with different roles do.

Anton: So far, the most important things I’ve learned are how work is actually done in real-world companies, some key practices for writing clean and high quality code, and a little bit about business logic in real projects.

7. What’s your favorite thing at Kodality so far?

Vladimir: I really look forward to knowledge sharing sessions because people always speak on very interesting topics.

Anton: For me, the most valuable aspect of this experience is the faster learning and the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on knowledge - something that goes beyond what is typically covered in university courses.

As of June 2025, both Vladimir and Anton have completed the first chapter of their Kodality journey, and they’re just getting started. Vladimir has successfully passed his trial period and continues with us as a junior developer, bringing both his medical background and technical curiosity to one of our mission-critical healthcare projects. Anton, after a strong internship filled with real impact and real growth, has been offered a junior developer role — and we’re happy to say he’s staying on as part of the Kodality team.
